Curt Schilling‘s financial struggles have been well-documented. His heart attack has not been.
Schilling told The Boston Globe that he suffered a heart attack back in November 2011. The former major league pitcher said that it was an event that he dealt with and moved on, but this is the first time that the incident has come to light.
“I was in New York with my wife, who was running the New York Marathon. I was watching it and I had chest pains,” Schilling told The Globe.
Schilling reportedly said that he waited for his wife to finish the marathon because he didn’t think his pains were anything serious. He then flew back to Boston, where he went straight from Logan Airport to a local hospital without an ambulance. Schilling reportedly underwent surgery the next day to insert a stent.
“Ya, as stupid as that was. My doctor made it clear that I was very, very, lucky,” Schilling reportedly wrote in a text message.
Schilling, whose father died of a massive stroke in front of him when he was 21, has had to deal with plenty of financial concerns — and inherently a ton of stress — in the wake of his failed 38 Studios video game company going bankrupt. The three-time World Series winner apparently wasn’t willing to place all of the blame on his failed endeavor, but he’s also looking at things realistically.
“I’m sure that was part of it,” Schilling reportedly said.
