David Ortiz Holds Baby During National Anthem in Kansas City, Results In Heart-Melting Photo, Video

David Ortiz is a very loving man (unless, of course, you’re a dugout telephone). He proved that again Thursday night in Kansas City.

Prior to the Red Sox’ game with the Kansas City Royals, Ortiz ended up with a baby in his arms. It wasn’t his baby, but there was a baby in his arms nonetheless. The baby remained in his arms as the national anthem started, so Ortiz did what any good father would do — he kept holding the baby.

That led to a terrific photo opportunity for an Associated Press photographer who snapped the picture of Ortiz and the baby taking in the anthem. But where oh where did this little thing come from? ESPN.com’s Gordon Edes tweeted an explanation, saying that Ortiz said fan handed him the child for a photo, then the anthem started.” Mystery solved.
