Between nagging injuries, the seemingly never-ending Alex Rodriguez saga and falling further and further behind the American League East-leading Red Sox, not much has gone right for the Yankees this season, and their captain is well aware of that.
After sitting out the past two games against the San Diego Padres, Derek Jeter could be headed back to the disabled list — again. An MRI revealed a Grade 1 strain in his calf Saturday night that could land him back on the DL as soon as Monday, according to ESPNNewYork.com.
“I’ll see what they say,” Jeter said after the Yankees loss to the Padres on Sunday. “It’s up to them. Of course, I’d like to not do it, but I understand any situation that they have.”
The Yankees have not made an official decision on their shortstop, but Jeter did not sound optimistic about his status or the entire season.
“It’s been terrible,” Jeter said. “It’s been like a nightmare. The whole season has been a nightmare. I wish that wasn’t the case, and we were sitting here talking about something besides another injury. We’ll see what happens. I have no idea.”
Jeter began the season on the DL, returned July 10 and suffered a strained right quad in his first game back that sidelined him once again. He returned July 28 but complained of pain in his calf the very next day.
The 39-year-old has appeared in just five games this season, hitting one home run and driving in two runs.
