Jake Peavy Takes Mound, Mike Napoli Sits as Red Sox Look for Series Win Against Blue Jays

Jake PeavyJake Peavy‘s first two starts in a Red Sox uniform were polar opposites of each other.

Peavy’s stay in Boston started strong as the right-hander went seven innings and allowed two runs in a 5-2 win over the Diamondbacks on Aug. 3. But start No. 2 didn’t go as well. Peavy allowed six runs and 10 hits over five innings of work in a 9-6 loss to the Royals last Friday.

The Red Sox hope that the Peavy from his first start in Boston will show up on Thursday night as they try to earn a series win in Toronto.

The Blue Jays are coming off a 4-3 extra-inning win on Wednesday night, and they will turn to Mark Buehrle to try to neutralize the Boston offense in the series finale. Buehrle has struggled against the Red Sox in the past, though, with a 6-9 record and 4.63 ERA over the last 10 years.

Boston’s starting lineup will be without Mike Napoli after he hit a two-run home run to send Wednesday’s game into extras. Daniel Nava will start at first in his place and bat eighth. Ryan Lavarnway will do the catching for Peavy and bat seventh.
