Two days before the Detroit Lions are scheduled to host the Patriots at Ford Field, they welcomed a special guest to their practice field.

Jeff Daniels, the star of HBO’s The Newsroom (and, of course, Dumb and Dumber), visited Lions practice in his home state of Michigan on Tuesday. Daniels swapped introductions with All-Pro wideout Calvin Johnson and spent some time with Tigers ace Max Scherzer, who had stopped by the Lions’ facility prior to his team’s game against the Twins across town.

Daniels’ presence at practice came as a surprise to Scherzer, the Cy Young candidate told WXYZ’s Brad Galli, and so did their topic of conversation. The television star was reportedly seen drilling Scherzer through various pitch sequences while the two talked on the sideline.

“I didn’t expect that,” Scherzer said of Daniels being at practice. “I know he’s a huge Detroit fan, follows all the sports teams. So it’s pretty cool to share that with him.”
