Jonny Gomes’ Unassisted Double Play in Left Field Preserves Red Sox’ Lead in 15th Inning (Video)

Unassisted double plays are nothing new in baseball, but they don’t usually come courtesy of the left fielder.

Jonny Gomes pulled off that rare feat Wednesday night — in the 15th inning, no less. With two men on and one out in a 4-4 game, Seattle’s Michael Saunders sent a sinking line drive into left field. Gomes robbed Saunders with a diving grab, however, before trotting to second base to double up Raul Ibanez.

The play ended the top of the 15th inning, and Stephen Drew‘s walk-off single in the bottom of the frame won it for the Red Sox.
