Juan Agudelo‘s tenure with the New England Revolution will ultimately be a short one, but he gave fans of the local team a memory that will last a lifetime.
Agudelo scored a spectacular goal in New England’s 2-0 win over the Chicago Fire on Saturday night. The 20-year-old used an audacious back-heel flick to beat onrushing Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson and put the ball across the goal line. A defender nearly cleared it off the line, but the referee ruled that it was a goal.
In terms of soccer theater, Agudelo’s goal was of the highest order. Chris Tierney floated a long pass forward, and it seemed to hang in the air forever. When it came down, it took a high bounce off of the Gillette Stadium turf, allowing Agudelo time to run underneath it. What he did next was bold, unexpected and crazy enough to open the scoring.
Revolution fans have seen some great goals over the years, including some that were more consequential than Agudelo’s. But his was one of the most skillful and unexpected goals any Revolution player has scored in the team’s 18-year history.
It was the third goal Agudelo has scored for the Revolution since joining the team in May. He won’t score too many more in Revs colors, as he has agreed to join Premier League club Stoke City in January.
