To paraphrase Paul Pierce, Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew is the classic example of a great player on a bad team.

Jones-Drew, who has rushed for more than 1,300 yards in three of the last four seasons, would probably prefer a playoff appearance or two along with his gaudy statistics, but it’s not his fault the Jags have been stuck with Chad Henne and Blaine Gabbert calling the signals the last two years. With Jones-Drew, one of Jacksonville’s few offensive threats, sidelined for most of last season, the Jags limped to an awful 2-14 record.

Such struggles haven’t kept Jones-Drew from staying optimistic and continuing to give back to his community, however. The three-time Pro Bowler hosted 300 kids at practice this week and handed out free backpacks filled with school supplies. The kids, large and small, clearly appreciated the gesture.
