Red Sox Release Jose Contreras, Ending 41-Year-Old’s Brief Stint With Pawtucket

The Red Sox signed veteran relievers Jose Contreras and Brandon Lyon back on July 19. Both are now gone.

Contreras, who has been pitching at Triple-A Pawtucket, has been granted his release, according to the PawSox. Lyon was also granted his release on Aug. 1.

Contreras was 0-2 with a 6.52 ERA (seven earned runs in 9 2/3 innings) in eight relief appearances with Pawtucket. The 41-year-old posted a 9.00 ERA in seven major league relief appearances with the Pirates earlier this season.

We’ll see if Contreras catches on with another team. He has already suited up for six major league organizations, although he never cracked the big club in Boston.
