Major League Baseball is done playing nice with Alex Rodriguez.
Rodriguez was trying to negotiate a suspension settlement with MLB officials, according to reports, but it appears that he has lost that opportunity. Instead, he will be facing a 214-game suspension, according to the New York Daily News. That means he would be suspended for the rest of this season plus all of next year.
MLB rejected the third baseman’s request to negotiate a settlement after comments Rodriguez made following Friday night’s minor league rehab game in Trenton, the Daily News reports a source as saying. Rodriguez insinuated that MLB and the Yankees were collaborating to delay his return to the game in order to void his contract.
Players association chief Michael Weiner reportedly reached out to MLB on Saturday morning to discuss possible settlement options but was told baseball has no interest in negotiating with the Yankee third baseman anymore, according to the source.
“They asked for a meeting this morning and were told ‘no,’” said the source. “Baseball is more than comfortable with what they have.”
The 38-year-old’s punishment is expected to be announced Monday.
