Update, 2:40 p.m. ET, Aug. 29: The Bruins announced on Thursday that the team has signed Chiarelli to a four-year contract extension through the 2017-18 season.
Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli has made it a point to do his best to keep the team’s core intact, and it looks like the organization is trying to do the same when it comes to keeping Chiarelli around.
ESPN.com reports Chiarelli and the Bruins are close to agreeing to a new contract extension for the general manager who is seen across the league as one of the best GMs in the NHL. Chiarelli has one more year left on his current deal, and while the new extension isn’t done just yet, it’s close, according to the report.
Chiarelli was hired as GM in 2006. He was given a contract extension in 2009, the deal that he is currently working under. The Bruins have made the playoffs every year of Chiarelli’s tenure other than his first, and that includes a 2011 Stanley Cup win. The B’s were back in the Stanley Cup Final this past season as well.
Chiarelli will also continue serving as an Alternate Governor on the NHL’s Board of Governors.
