Another suspension may be looming in Major League Baseball, but this one has nothing to do with Biogenesis.
Royals second baseman Miguel Tejada is on the verge of being suspended 105 games after failing multiple tests for the prescription drug Adderall, sources told Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan. The suspension reportedly could be handed down as early as Saturday afternoon.
Tejada had already tested positive under MLB’s amphetamine policy, subjecting him to a 25-game suspension for a second positive test and an 80-game ban for a third. He failed two tests earlier this season, according to Passan, resulting in the combined 105-game punishment — the third-longest non-lifetime suspension in major league history.
Should these reports prove valid, this suspension will likely end Tejada’s career. The 39-year-old is currently in his 16th season in the majors, breaking in with the Royals after failing to make the Orioles’ major league roster in 2012.
Though he is a far cry from the player he was in the early 2000s, when he won the 2002 American League Most Valuable Player Award, was named to six All-Star Games and won the SIlver Slugger Award twice, Tejada has been solid in a utility role for Kansas City this season. In 56 games, he is batting .288 with three home runs and 20 RBIs.
Since breaking into the majors in 1997, Tejada has spent time with the A’s, Orioles, Astros, Padres, Giants and Royals.
