Ryan Kalish’s injury woes continue. This time, it’s a pesky neck.
The 25-year-old Red Sox outfielder will have cervical fusion surgery in Los Angeles on Tuesday, the club announced late Monday. Dr. Robert Watkins is to perform the operation at Marina Bay Hospital.
Kalish has been on the disabled list all year after having surgery in January on his right shoulder labrum. He had surgery on his left shoulder labrum and disc surgery on his neck at separate points in 2011. The injuries all stem back to a diving catch in 2011, when Kalish was playing for Triple-A Pawtucket.
Kalish said he hopes to be back for spring training this coming year, according to MassLive.com.
“I am certainly bummed, but I am keeping my perspective that life could be worse,” he said. “I am blessed with great family and friends, and I will be back.”
Kalish first played for the Red Sox in 2010. He has hit .243 with four home runs and 13 stolen bases in his 89 games in the big leagues, his last appearance coming in 2012.
