Ryan Mallett left the Patriots’ preseason opener a little early on Friday night.

Mallett, who was expected to get a good portion of the snaps against the Eagles, took a rough hit late in the second quarter and was forced to leave the game. The Patriots announced that Mallett was dealing with a head injury and his return was questionable.

Mallett played a few series on the field before taking the hit. He completed 9 of 18 passes for 97 yards on the night and helped engineer two scoring drives for the Patriots offense while he was out there. He didn’t look too steady, underthrowing a few routes and missing on a couple third-down attempts, but did have his moments, including a nice 22-yard pass to tight end Zach Sudfeld.
