Justin Rielly Nauman says that he was sexually assaulted by former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. Afterward, his life became derailed by drug abuse before Nauman turned to crime.
Now, Nauman, like Sandusky, will be heading to state prison in Pennsylvania.
Nauman was sentenced to between 15 months and five years in state prison Monday for robbing a woman, according to Lancasteronline.com. Nauman is said to have tried to steal the woman’s purse before dragging her 80 feet because she wouldn’t let go. The incident occurred in Warwick Township, Penn.
“It’s obvious to me that you are one of the unfortunate persons who had a difficult childhood,” Lancaster County judge Dennis Reinaker said to Nauman. “I’m sure everybody had the best intentions in sending you to The Second Mile. But, obviously, you were taken advantage of there.
“The fact of the matter is, this is a very serious offense. That woman easily could have been killed.”
Nauman is not believed to be among the 10 victims named as part of the criminal case against Sandusky. State officials, however, said that Nauman was abused while a part of Sandusky’s The Second Mile foundation in the 1990s.
In a letter of support sent to the court on Nauman’s behalf, a recent settlement is mentioned without specifics, as the letter is not a public document. The letter may have been referencing the $60 million in out-of-court settlements that Penn State is paying to victims of Sandusky.
At the sentencing, Nauman apologized for his crime.
“I’d just like to apologize to the victim for my actions; I think about that every day,” he said. “I’m remorseful from the bottom of my heart.”
