Home plate umpire Jerry Layne didn’t waste any time getting down to business on Sunday afternoon, throwing out a Chicago White Sox bench coach during the lineup card exchange.
Mark Parent was tossed from the game — before the game even started — after trading a few words with the crew chief. Parent was not in the clubhouse after the game to explain what led to the dismissal, but according to MLB.com, the heated exchange likely stemmed from controversial calls going against the Sox in the first two games of their series against the Rangers.
“Yeah, it was just something from [Saturday] night,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “It’s over, and [you] play.”
Regardless of what Parent was arguing, getting tossed from the game before the first pitch is even thrown is quite the feat, but designated hitter Adam Dunn had a different take on the interaction at home plate.Â
“I think he was asking for his address to send him a Christmas card or something,” Dunn said with a smile. “But I guess no use in waiting around. You might as well just get it done. It was hot out there.”
