One of the more interesting topics that continues to surround the 2013 Red Sox is who will play on the left side of the infield.
Right now, it looks like the plan is to have Stephen Drew play shortstop, but the plan at third base remains unclear. Boston is switching between Brandon Snyder and Brock Holt at third for now, but could it be waiting for the right moment to call up Xander Bogaerts?
That is the speculation surrounding the Red Sox, but in the meantime, Bogaerts continues to play in Triple-A. His numbers weren’t great over the past week — 8-for-30 (.267), three runs, one RBI and two walks — but in an interesting turn of events, he did see some playing time at third on Thursday.
Will Middlebrooks, who usually starts at third for Pawtucket, didn’t play on Thursday after being ejected the night before. Despite the ejection, Middlebrooks still had a good week at the plate, as he hit .292 with four runs, three RBIs and one home run.
While the debate over who will play third continues, another highly regarded PawSox prospect suffered an injury this week. Outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. was placed on the seven-day disabled list on July 31 due to elbow inflammation.
But none of these players were top performers in the Red Sox minor league system this week. Instead, it was pitchers Anthony Ranaudo, Henry Owens and Jamie Callahan, and right fielder Aneury Tavarez and catcher Blake Swihart who had the best weeks in Boston’s farm system.
