The White Sox have stumbled through a miserable 2013 season, finishing in the basement of the American League Central division with one of the worst records in baseball. There haven’t been very many causes for celebration at U.S. Cellular Field, but the South Siders are jumping at any chance they see to cue the fireworks — even if the result is complete and utter confusion.
During the sixth inning, Alexi Ramirez lifted a fly ball to left field that had Royals outfielder Alex Gordon all sorts of confused. Gordon scaled the outfield fence, momentarily lost track of the ball and eventually came back down on the warning track to make the catch. What looked like a sure home run from the way Gordon was playing it, resulted in a routine second out of the inning.
The unintentional trick play had the White Sox in a premature celebration. Ramirez was rounding third before he was told his home run trot was all for naught. The U.S. Cellular organist began playing  “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” before the ball even landed and the fireworks show erupted as Hawk Harrelson was retracting his traditional “You can put it on the board! Yes!”
“He deked the whole stadium,” starting pitcher James Shields told the Kansas City Star. “When he climbed up on the wall, I figured it was a home run. I looked back at the umpire, Jerry [Meals], to ask for a new ball. The fireworks are going off, and I’m looking at Salvy [Perez], who’s saying, ‘He caught it! He caught it.’ I looked back, and [Ramirez] is still rounding the bases and thinking, ‘What’s going on right now?'”
