Final, Red Wings 8-2: The Bruins killed off the penalty, but it doesn’t really matter of course.
This one is over, with Detroit winning 8-2.
Third period, 16:03, Red Wings 8-2: Gregory Campbell is going to get reacquainted with the penalty box as well.
He was just called for hooking, and the Red Wings are looking to make it nine on the night.
Third period, 14:13, Red Wings 8-2: And now the two-point conversion.
Pavel Datsyuk just scored on a breakaway, which he has been known to do from time to time.
Third period, 14:00, Red Wings 7-2: The Red Wings just added the extra point for good measure. Joakim Andersson scores to make it 7-2.
Third period, 12:56, Red Wings 6-2: It didn’t take long for the Red Wings to take advantage of the power play, as they now have a touchdown on the night.
The goal is credited to Henrik Zetterberg who was in front, and tipped it home. It may have caught a Bruin on the way through.
Third period, 12:30, Red Wings 5-2: Jordan Caron was just called for boarding, and after the play, things got chippy again. In the middle of it all was Torey Krug.
Third period, 11:42, Red Wings 5-2: Nick Johnson just scored an absolutely gorgeous goal for the Bruins.
The journeyman forward made pylons out of a Detroit defenseman in the offensive zone and then was able to get Tom McCollum to go down as he lifted a backhander up under the crossbar.
Third period, 9:10, Red Wings 5-1: Carl Soderberg has been quiet for much of the game, but he just earned the Bruins a power play.
His stickhandling into the Detroit zone forced Adam Almquist into a hooking penalty.
Third period, 8:20, Red Wings 5-1: Gregory Campbell has gotten a decent amount of run in his return to game action, his first appearance since breaking his leg in last year’s playoffs.
Campbell had played 8:36 in 11 shifts through the first two periods, with much of that time (3:02) coming on the penalty kill. He also won three of six faceoffs through the first two periods.
Third period, 4:36, Red Wings 5-1: Malcolm Subban will no doubt learn from this experience, but it hasn’t been a fun night for the young goaltender.
He just gave up his fifth goal of the evening as Dan Cleary beat him on a 2-on-1 breakaway. It wasn’t exactly the best position for Subban to be in, of course, but he did get a piece of the puck and probably should have had it.
Third period, 0:00, Red Wings 4-1: The third period is underway.
End second period, Red Wings 4-1: The horn blows on the second period, and the Red Wings lead 4-1 after 40 minutes of play.
Second period, 19:33, Red Wings 4-1: Torey Krug, not one really known to drop the gloves, just fought.
He and David McIntyre dropped ’em after a battle in the corners. Krug gets the win with the takedown after maybe landing a punch of two.
Second period, 16:32, Red Wings 4-1: It’s back to the penalty kill for the Bruins.
This time, it was Matt Bartkowski called for boarding after he planted Jordin Tootoo into the boards in the Boston end.
Second period, 11:57, Red Wings 4-1: The Bruins are on the board, and it’s Jarome Iginla doing the honors.
Iginla was the beneficiary of a very nice play by Matt Bartkowski, whose individual effort as he skated down below the goal line before dishing it back to the front where Iginla banged it by Jimmy Howard.
Second period, 11:07, Red Wings 4-0: The Bruins were on the power play for just a few seconds, so that’s a wasted opportunity.
Jordin Tootoo was called for a hit to the head minor, but that was quickly wiped out eight seconds later by a Zdeno Chara high-sticking penalty.
Dougie Hamilton just had an impressive rush during 4-on-4 play, as he carried the puck up the left wing and put on the brakes to shake Tomas Tatar. Hamilton then stepped into a slap shot from the faceoff circle, but he put it right in Jimmy Howard’s stomach.
Second period, 9:20, Red Wings 4-0: Malcolm Subban is taking his lumps right now, as this one is getting a little bit out of hand.
Danny Dekeyser just beat Subban up over the goalie’s right shoulder on the short side to extend the lead to four goals. It’s probably a goal that Subban would like to have back, but it’s probably also a shot that Subban hasn’t seen a ton at the level he’s played at up to this point.
Second period, 7:40, Red Wings 3-0: The Bruins weren’t able to score on either of the power plays, but the did get one good chance on the 5-on-3.
However, Jimmy Howard stoned Milan Lucic, and Zdeno Chara — who was playing down low on the first unit — wasn’t able to control the rebound as Howard poked it away.
Second period, 5:39, Red Wings 3-0: The Bruins’ power play just became a 5-on-3.
Dan Cleary’s hooking penalty puts the B’s up two men.
Second period, 4:29, Red Wings 3-0: It’s been a rough night for Malcolm Subban so far, but it’s not totally his fault. The Bruins haven’t played well, and he’s been victimized by some really good players.
Like just now, where he just gave up another goal, this one to Henrik Zetterberg. The Detroit captain took the pass from Pavel Datsyuk and slammed it by Subban for the 3-0 lead.
The Bruins are going on the power play, though. Just seconds after the goal, Niklas Kronwall was sent to the penalty box, and Boston gets its first power play of the night.
Second period, 0:47, Red Wings 2-0: The Bruins just killed off Adam McQuaid’s hooking penalty, and we’re back to even strength here in the second.
Second period, 0:01, Red Wings 2-0: The second period is underway, with the Bruins trailing 2-0.
End first period, Red Wings 2-0: The first period comes to an end with the Bruins’ penalty kill doing a good job, but they still have 43 seconds left to kill off of Adam McQuaid’s penalty.
First period, 18:43, Red Wings 2-0: The Bruins are going back on the penalty kill, this time after an Adam McQuaid hooking penalty.
First period, 17:29, Red Wings 2-0: We just got our first rough stuff of the night, but it wasn’t much to speak of.
Matt Fraser dropped the gloves for the Bruins against Detroit’s Jakub Kindl, but there weren’t many punches thrown at all. Kindl was kind of caught in an awkward spot, but he didn’t appear to want much to with it at that point.
First period, 16:50, Red Wings 2-0: The Bruins aren’t doing a good enough job of clearing pucks in front of the net, and the Red Wings are making them pay for that.
David McIntyre just scored to give the Wings a 2-0 lead, after he was able to clean up the garbage in front. The Wings had an extra skater on after a delayed penalty to Boston, but the real issue was up front. Like he did earlier, Malcolm Subban made the initial save, but neither he nor the Bruins’ defensemen — Torey Krug and Adam McQuaid — could clear it.
First period, 15:50, Red Wings, 1-0: The Bruins are getting the better of the chances here in the first period, except for the glaring exception that is the Red Wings’ goal.
Milan Lucic just came close to potting one, as his line — with David Krejci and Jarome Iginla — got the puck in deep and produced a quality scoring chance. Jimmy Howard stopped Lucic’s offering, and the B’s couldn’t jump on the rebound, which came squirting out in front.
First period, 11:50, Red Wings 1-0: The Bruins’ best chance of the evening came thanks in large part to Torey Krug, who continues to have himself a nice little preseason.
Krug carried the puck up the ice, through the neutral zone and into the offensive end with little issue. He then dished it off to Craig Cunningham who came streaking down the right wing, but Jimmy Howard was able to turn away the scoring chance.
We’re tied in shots 3-3.
First period, 5:01, Red Wings 1-0: It didn’t take long for the Red Wings to get on the board.
Pavel Datsyuk made a pass through the slot from just above the right faceoff dot to Justin Abdelkader in front. Abelkader’s first shot was turned away by Malcolm Subban right in front, but Abdelkader gathered the loose puck and jammed home the rebound.
First period, 3:53, 0-0: The Red Wings will get the first power play of the evening. Jarome Iginla was just called for holding.
First period, 0:01, 0-0: The game is under way here from TD Garden.
6:45 p.m.: Malcolm Subban led the Bruins out for warmups, while Jimmy Howard led the Red Wings out. Those will be your starting goalies.
6:18 p.m.: Good evening, and for the first time since the Stanley Cup Final, welcome to TD Garden for Bruins hockey. We’re a little under than an hour from puck drop.

1:19 p.m.: It appears Chad Johnson actually won’t get a chance to further his case for the backup job Thursday night.
Bruins coach Claude Julien just said Malcolm Subban is expected to play the entire game.
12 p.m. ET: The Bruins will play a game at TD Garden on Thursday night for the first time since they saw the Chicago Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup in June. There won’t be nearly as much on the line Thursday, but there’s certainly plenty at stake.
The B’s will play their preseason home opener against the Detroit Red Wings, offering fans their “first” glimpse of one of the Bruins’ new division rivals. Detroit and Boston are both apart of the league’s new Atlantic Division, which was one of the byproducts of the league’s new realignment.
It’s the Bruins’ third preseason tilt after winning in Montreal on Monday and earning a shootout victory over the Capitals in Baltimore on Tuesday. On Thursday night, there will be plenty worth keeping an eye on. Gregory Campbell is going to make his first appearance since breaking his leg in the Eastern Conference finals against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Speaking of the Penguins, Jarome Iginla will take Garden ice in a Bruins sweater for the first time. Also, Zdeno Chara is making his first appearance of the preseason.
All of those guys have roster spots locked up, though. That’s the case for much of the club, too. However, there are a few roster battles going on, and one of those is on the blue line. Torey Krug, Dougie Hamilton and Matt Bartkowski are battling for two spots, and all three will be in the lineup Thursday night. Another positional battle ongoing is for Tuukka Rask’s backup. Chad Johnson is expected to battling for that spot with Niklas Svedberg, and Johnson will get his latest chance to vie for that job Thursday night. He’s expected to split time with Malcolm Subban, who will also be making his first appearance in Boston in his first training camp as a professional.
