David Ortiz Crashes John Farrell’s News Conference, Jokingly Reenacts 2011 Outburst

John Farrell, David OrtizBOSTON — You probably didn’t need any more proof that this year’s Red Sox team is a loose bunch. But David Ortiz showed just how relaxed they are prior to Thursday’s series finale against the Orioles.

Ortiz barged into John Farrell‘s pregame news conference Thursday and started complaining about the scorekeeper — just as he did during one of Terry Francona‘s pregame news conferences in 2011. Only this time, Ortiz was kidding around.

“I’m just [bleeping] with you all,” Ortiz said, smiling.

The spoof stems from an incident that occurred back on Aug. 4, 2011. A visibly upset Ortiz barged into Francona’s pregame news conference because he was disgruntled about a decision made by the official scorer that resulted in him losing an RBI. The incident made headlines and came just a month before the Red Sox’ epic collapse that season.

It’s been clear this season that the Red Sox are more focused on getting back to the playoffs and doing damage in October than racking up individual statistics. Thursday’s funny incident served as a reminder, as one of the club’s incumbent leaders was able to keep things loose despite back-to-back losses to the O’s.
