Though it was somewhat lost amid the Red Sox endless offensive onslaught, David Ortiz reached a major career milestone Wednesday night.
The designated hitter recorded his 2,000th career hit in the Sox’ 20-4 rout of the Tigers, becoming the 14th Boston hitter to reach the mark and the first to do so since Manny Ramirez in 2006. The crowd at Fenway Park commemorated the landmark hit, an RBI double in the sixth inning, by giving Ortiz a nearly minute-long standing ovation, which the slugger accepted with a wave of his helmet.
Ortiz was the star of the Red Sox’ most impressive display of offensive power in more than 30 years, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two of the team’s eight home runs — tying the club record for homers in a game set back in July 1977.
