Defender Jan Vertonghen Pulls Down Shorts of Striker Nicklas Helenius to Keep Him From Scoring (Video)

Tottenahm Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen was going to stop Aston Villa striker Nicklas Helenius from scoring by any means necessary, and his all-out defending produced one of the funniest moments ever seen on a soccer field.

Helenius was a step ahead of Vertonghen in Tottenham’s penalty area as he prepared to shoot, so the Belgian defender made one last, desperate attempt at denying the goal-scoring opportunity: He pulled Helenius’ shorts down.

The incident occurred on Tuesday during a League Cup game between Aston Villa and Tottenham. Spurs were leading 1-0 in the 46th minute when Vertonghen “DP’d” Helenius. Despite wearing his shorts around his knees, Helenius still managed to take a shot, which did not beat Tottenham’s veteran American goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

The referee didn’t show the 26-year-old stopper a yellow card nor did he award a penalty kick. Maybe he was laughing too hard.
