Think of this as Ping-Pong diplomacy, only with bigger balls and no paddles.
Dennis Rodman, who apparently thinks that people aren’t laughing behind his back in his efforts to be some sort of unofficial emissary to North Korea, wants to bring a team of former NBA All-Stars to play in a tournament for North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, USA Today reports. The 12-man team would include Karl Malone, Scottie Pippen and other retired players for a tournament in January, Rodman reportedly said in a news conference Monday morning.
If those legends agree to play in North Korea, Rodman claims, Kim Jong-un would reciprocate — by gracing the U.S. with his presence.
“If I pull this off, I asked [Kim] to come to New York to a Knicks game,” Rodman said. “And what did he say? ‘That would be amazing.'”
Of course Kim thinks that would be amazing, Dennis. Have you tried to get tickets to a Knicks game as an average fan lately? You’d have better luck getting into North Korea.
Oh. Nevermind.
Anyhow, Rodman wants everyone to know this is not some publicity stunt. He really does plan to bring a team to North Korea, which would really show Hillary Clinton, who Rodman apparently thinks should do something about North Korea, even though she hasn’t been Secretary of State in seven months. Details, details.
“I’m not a joke,” he said. “Take me seriously.”
Rodman had previously said he would ask Kim to release imprisoned U.S. citizen Kenneth Bae. Rodman returned home this weekend without Bae and said he would not ask Kim for Bae’s freedom.
