A few people were worried about how Eagles fans would receive Donovan McNabb when the quarterback returned to Philadelphia to have his number retired on Thursday. As it turns out, they need not have worried.

McNabb was showered with cheers, not boos, when he addressed the crowd and as his No. 5 was unveiled with the rest of the retired numbers at Lincoln Financial Field at halftime of the Eagles’ game against the Chiefs. A visibly emotional McNabb made some brief comments, but it was clear he did not want to say much and just enjoy the moment.

“I stand here to tell you, from the bottom of my heart, that I truly appreciate everything that you’ve done for me,” McNabb told the fans. “Words can’t say how much I truly love you.”
