EA Sports Won’t Release College Football Video Game in 2014, Future of Franchise Uncertain

1374261771_ncaafootball14The only football game that EA Sports will make next year is the latest installment of Madden NFL.

Cam Weber of EA Sports released a statement on Thursday saying, “Today I am sad to announce that we will not be publishing a new college football game next year, and we are evaluating our plan for the future of the franchise.”

He further explained the company’s decision by adding that EA Sports has “been stuck in the middle of a dispute between the NCAA and student-athletes who seek compensation for playing college football. … For our part, we are working to settle the lawsuits with the student-athletes.”

NCAA Football is one of EA Sports’ most popular franchises, and this year’s version led all United States video games sales during July.

The decision not to publish a new NCAA Football game is also going to impact schools financially. ESPN sports business reporter Darren Rovell tweeted that, “EA Sports gave more licensing royalties than any other non-apparel licensee.”

This announcement does not officially signal the end of the NCAA Football series, but its future does not look bright.
