The Miami Marlins had a rather unimpressive year, finishing in the basement of the National League East with 100 losses. But on the last day of the season, Henderson Alvarez and his teammates capped off the 2013 campaign in style with some late-inning drama.

Alvarez was untouchable in his final start, holding the Tigers hitless through nine innings on the mound. Unfortunately for the 23-year-old, though, Justin Verlander and the Detroit bullpen were shutting out Miami, and the score was knotted at 0-0 when the Marlins came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth.

After giving up consecutive singles to Giancarlo Stanton and Logan Morrison, Luke Putkonen issued a walk with two outs to load the bases in the bottom of the frame. With Alvarez waiting to bat in the on-deck circle, the Tigers reliever threw a wild pitch, allowing Stanton to score from third and making the no-hitter official.

Alvarez was set to pitch the top of the 10th, but there proved to be no need for free baseball. Alvarez struck out four and walked one en route to his 99-pitch gem.
