The Red Sox have been rolling lately, but some troubling news has emerged from their series in New York.
Jacoby Ellsbury, who missed Friday’s game against the Yankees, was sent back to Boston to have his right foot examined. An MRI revealed swelling and inflammation, according to John Farrell, and Ellsbury will receive a second opinion in Denver.
Farrell said that Ellsbury’s injury, which has forced the outfielder into a boot, is to the navicular bone. Dustin Pedroia broke the same bone in 2010, and he missed most of the final two months that year. It’s clear that Ellsbury is more than just day-to-day.
Farrell said Saturday that Ellsbury feels he can play through the injury, and that the Red Sox medical staff felt that the 29-year-old needed a battery of tests to get a better understanding of his injury.
Ellsbury initially suffered the injury while fouling a ball off his foot on Aug. 28. He aggravated it while stealing second base in the 10th inning of Thursday’s game.
Shane Victorino is expected to continue to bat leadoff in Ellsbury’s absence, and outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. has been called up from Pawtucket.
