The Redskins lost to the Packers on Sunday, and looked pretty bad doing it. Led by quarterback Robert Griffin III, Washington failed to get on the scoreboard until almost eight minutes into the third quarter, were out-possessed by almost five full minutes and converted only three of 11 attempts on third down.
Don’t saddle Griffin with all the blame for the loss, though. Hall of Fame coach Mike Ditka came to Griffin’s defense Monday morning, pointing out that the Redskins’ defense giving up 38 points and 580 yards of offense to Green Bay might have had something to do with the loss.
“Guys, don’t blame RGIII,” Ditka told ESPN Radio, according to the DC Sports Blog. “Look, their defense in Washington doesn’t even exist. They didn’t even show up in the first half of that game. I mean, they were horrible. Horrible. Now, RGIII threw the ball, it hit the guy in the hands, they got an interception, OK?
“You pick on him when it’s right to pick on him, but right now, all I see is a kid out there trying to get his team back on track. He’s a great leader. He’s going to play as well as he can. If the defense steps up and plays at all, they’ll have a chance to win.”
Griffin was 26-of-40 passing for 320 yards. He threw three touchdowns and one interception on a pass that bounced off the hands of receiver Josh Morgan.
