Ndamukong Suh still hasn’t learned sportsmanship, and he’s going to pay big time for it.
Suh laid a low block on Vikings center John Sullivan during an interception return in the Lions’ 34-32 win on Sunday. The block was not only low, but also far enough away from the play that it could easily be deemed unnecessary and almost malicious.
The NFL was considering suitable punishments for Suh. While a suspension seemed unlikely, the actual punishment was still stiff. The league has fined Suh $100,000 for the dirty block, according to Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report.
Suh has now been fined six times in his three-year NFL career, and he was suspended two games in 2011 for stomping on the arm of Packers offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith. The combination of fines and suspension (two lost game checks) adds up to almost $350,000 in lost wages for Suh over the past three years.
Sunday’s hit didn’t appear to be deserving of a suspension, but Suh’s continued streak of unsportsmanlike behavior needs to be dealt with at some point. As much as the $100,000 fine might resonate with many around the league, a guy still raking in the remainder of a $65 million rookie deal might not hear the message quite that loudly.
