Ndamukong Suh was fined $100,000 by the NFL on Tuesday, the largest fine ever handed down to a player who wasn’t suspended. Now, Suh is trying to get that number reduced.
Suh and his agents are gathering information to appeal the fine, according to ESPN, claiming that the amount is excessive under NFL rules.
The NFL’s discipline system is based on escalating punishments, which would gradually increase fines or suspensions considering past history. Suh had been fined five times and served a two-game suspension earlier in his career before Sunday’s low block on Vikings center John Sullivan. His most recent fine before Sunday was for “kicking” Texans quarterback Matt Schaub in the groin during a game last season. That incident cost him $30,000, making the $100,000, at the very least, seem excessive.
Suh’s appeal will be heard by either former coach Ted Cottrell or former player Matt Birk. Both may have at least a small bias in the situation, considering Cotrell was the Vikings’ defensive coordinator (2004-2005) and Birk was, like Sullivan, a center himself and played 11 seasons with Minnesota.
