The Patriots could really use better depth at wide receiver, but don’t expect Brandon Lloyd to come walking through that door.
Lloyd, who was released by the team during the offseason, has been approached by the Patriots about a possible return this season, according to Pro Football Talk. The former Pro Bowl receiver is reportedly not interested in returning, though. Five other teams have also reached out to Lloyd, including the Jets and 49ers, according to PFT, but he has turned away their interest in his services as well.
The Patriots are extremely thin at receiver right now, with Danny Amendola and tight end Rob Gronkowski both unlikely to play against the Jets. Rookie receiver Aaron Dobson was inactive for Sunday’s season opener, and rookies Kenbrell Thompkins and Josh Boyce didn’t exactly earn Tom Brady‘s confidence in Week 1.
Lloyd was highly productive in his only season with the Patriots, catching 74 passes for 911 yards and four touchdowns. The Patriots released him in March, though, in order to avoid paying him a $3 million roster bonus. Since then, all has been quiet on the Lloyd front, with not as much as a few peeps about interest on the free-agent market.
Recent reports claimed that Lloyd doesn’t plan to play this season and that he’s likely to retire, which PFT’s source would seem to corroborate.
