Alexander Guerrero no longer looks poised to don Dodger blue.
There were reports last week that Los Angeles was closing in on a multi-year contract with Guerrero, but talks have since broken down, and FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal now reports that it’s unclear how heavily the Dodgers will remain involved in the negotiations for the 26-year-old Cuban infielder.
CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman reports that the bidding for Guerrero, who remains a free agent, is “wide open.” The Dodgers are still considered the favorite to land Guerrero, but the Red Sox, Reds, Rangers and Giants are among the other teams that may have some interest, according to Heyman.
There were reports last week that Guerrero was close to signing a five-year, $32 million contract with the Dodgers, but he has since dropped agent Rudy Santin in favor of Scott Boras. According to Rosenthal, the Dodgers — at least for the time being — no longer are willing to sign Guerrero for $32 million, although, Rosenthal says, the team’s position might simply be strategic.
This isn’t the first time that the Red Sox have been linked to Guerrero. Darren Wolfson of ESPN 1500 reported last month that the Red Sox were in the mix for the infielder, although Yahoo! Sports’ Tim Brown later reported that Boston was not among the final bidders.
Guerrero’s offense is considered his strength. He sat out the 2013 season after not making Cuba’s final World Baseball Classic roster, though, so there are apparently character concerns.
