There’s arguably nothing better than a Rocky Balboa training montage.

Whether he was running through snow, sprinting on the beach or galloping up stairs, Rocky really pushed the limits when it came to preparing for a fight. But was running a 50k really necessary to beat Apollo Creed in Rocky II?

Most folks remember the two-minute clip of the local boy running through the streets of Philadelphia and eventually ending up at the top of a very long set of stairs at the Art Museum. But did anyone stop to think about exactly how long he ran? Dan McQuade of phillymag.com did some incredible research and mapped Rocky’s route and his results were astonishing. According to McQuade, Rocky ran over 30 miles during the run, proving the distance by breaking down the route by scene:

  • Scene 1: Rocky’s house, 2313 S. Lambert Street
  • Scene 2, Lehigh Avenue train right-of-way
  • Scene 3, Italian Market
  • Scene 4, B Street Bridge at E. Gurney
  • Scene 5, Kelly Drive
  • Scene 6, Chestnut Street
  • Scene 7, Independence Hall
  • Scene 8, Benjamin Franklin Parkway to Art Museum steps

Check out the map of the route and the entire scene in the video below.
