Tiger Woods didn’t win any major championships in 2013, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that he had a tremendously successful season.
On Thursday, the 14-time major champion won the Jack Nicklaus Award as PGA Tour Player of the Year. It’s the 11th time that Woods has captured this honor since making his tour debut in 1997. He now has three POTY awards from seasons without any major wins.
Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott, who won this year’s British Open and Masters, respectively, were other top contenders for the Nicklaus Award, which is determined by a player vote.
Woods led the PGA with five victories this season, three more than every other player on tour. He also won his 10th money title and had the best scoring percentage on tour. In addition to these achievements, the 37-year-old has reclaimed the No. 1 world ranking.
Despite being a consistent performer in 2013, Woods managed only two top 10 finishes at majors and shot a 70 or worse in the final round of each tournament. He’s still four majors victories behind Nicklaus’ record of 18 and hasn’t won any of these events since his incredible U.S. Open triumph in 2008.
