Some fans will go to any lengths to take home the perfect ballpark souvenir — even if it means they could get arrested.
Two men in Chicago decided they wanted a very unique souvenir from Wrigley Field, so they broke into the park in the wee hours of the morning on Monday to try and steal pieces of the 76-year-old ivy on the outfield walls, according to a report from ESPN Chicago. The two men, Kevin Burge and Steven Gudknecht, were arrested and charged with misdemeanor trespassing, police told the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune.
Burge and Gudknecht were able to enter the ballpark by squeezing through the metal security bars, but were caught when security guards at the park saw them on closed-circuit security cameras.
Julian Green, a spokesperson for the Cubs said that the fans were indeed trying to take pieces of the ivy, but there wasn’t any property damage.
“When you have two individuals intent on committing foul play, they are going to find a way,” Green said, according to the Tribune. “These were just some fans who probably wanted to take a piece of Wrigley Field back home.”
