The Washington Nationals held a moment of silence at Nationals Park on Tuesday to honor the victims of a tragedy in their own backyard, and the team is going a step further to help those affected.
On Monday, a gunman opened fire at the Washington Navy Yard, killing 13 people including himself. Nationals Park is located in the Navy Yard neighborhood of Washington, D.C., and many fans use the Navy Yard Metro stop when attending Nats games. Because of the stadium’s close proximity to the incident, Monday’s game against the Braves was postponed until Tuesday.
When the teams took the field Tuesday, the Nationals were wearing special blue game jerseys with stars and stripes over the “W” logo. They also wore navy blue caps with a gold “N” on them, which is the logo typically used by the United States Naval Academy for their athletic program. Major League Baseball has announced that those jerseys will be auctioned off by the team, with the money going to “tragedy assistance,” according to Buzzfeed’s Michael Hayes.
