Move over, Chihuahuas. It’s the RubberDucks’ time to shine.
The Indians’ Double-A affiliate in Akron, known as the Aeros for the last 17 years, announced Tuesday morning that it will be rebranding itself as the Akron RubberDucks, complete with new logos, uniforms and color scheme.
Akron, where the Goodyear tire company is headquartered, has long been known as “The Rubber Capital of the World,” and team owner Ken Babby says the team’s new identity is a way to acknowledge the city’s history while also appealing to young fans.
“The logo accomplishes a lot of things,” Babby told MiLB.com. “Right off the bat, it represents the grit and fierceness of this blue-collar market. But it also represents the brand of entertainment that we’re trying to create: a place where you can come in, have fun and forget life’s problems.”
The RubberDucks now become the newest member in the fraternity of oddly named Eastern League clubs, joining the Bowie Baysox, Reading Fightin Phils, Richmond Flying Squirrels and Portland Sea Dogs, among others.
