The government shutdown that went into effect early Tuesday morning may leave some college football squads high and dry this weekend.
The Department of Defense has suspended all interscholastic athletic competition at the service academies until further notice, forcing athletic directors to scramble to adjust schedules.
All three service academies have football games scheduled for this Saturday, with Navy hosting Air Force and Army taking on Boston College in Chestnut Hill.
The Naval Academy, which has already canceled its men’s soccer game scheduled for Tuesday night, said in a statement that a decision on whether Saturday’s game will be played will be made on Thursday. BC, meanwhile, announced Tuesday that the school is working with representatives from West Point in an effort to play their game as scheduled, though no official decision has been made.
“We have been in close communication with Army athletics officials regarding the potential impact of the government shutdown on this Saturday’s football game,” BC athletic director Brad Bates said in a statement. “Obviously our intention is to exhaust all possibilities to play the game and we will communicate the information promptly as soon as we have resolution.”
The Eagles fell to 2-2 this season and 1-1 in ACC play after dropping a 48-34 decision to Florida State last Saturday.
