Peyton Manning‘s divorce from the Indianapolis Colts seemed like one of the most mutual and cordial splits in sports history. That spotless surface might not have been the whole story, though.
Manning’s visit to Indianapolis was always going to be the story of the NFL in Week 7, as it’s the first time the Colts’ legend will return to the place where he made so many lasting memories. Colts owner Jim Irsay only exacerbated the storyline this week by running his mouth about Manning and the quarterback’s tenure with the franchise.
Since Irsay’s initial comments, there has been a lot of chatter about the breakup, including some thoughts from former Colts general manager Bill Polian. Polian was on ESPN’s SportsCenter on Friday to talk about Manning’s return, and he had a few interesting tidbits that make the split seem a little more tenuous than it appeared.
“That’s not really what happened,” Polian said in response to Sage Steele’s suggestion that it was a mutual decision. “He was cut. He wanted to stay very badly right up until the end.”
