Brad Stevens Does Not Normally Name Captains, But Rajon Rondo Would Be Pick If He Did

Brad StevensBrad Stevens prefers to let leadership organically develop, rather than naming a leader by designating captains before each season. That could make the 2013-14 campaign the first time in 50 years that the Celtics do not have an official team captain.

If Stevens were to name a captain, however, his pick would be Rajon Rondo.

“I’ve never done official captains,” Stevens told reporters after Wednesday’s preseason loss to the Knicks. “If that’s something that’s important or we need to do or we need to talk about, then we can do that.

“[Rondo is] the guy that sits in the middle when we stretch, he’s the guy that’s been here, he’s done that. So if we had to name one, he’d be the one.”

Rondo is out until at least December as he recovers from February surgery on his partially torn ACL. He has never been a captain in his seven-year career, since Paul Pierce had a stranglehold on that spot for 13 seasons. But being a captain could be good practice for Rondo’s potential future in coaching.
