The Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns played a surprisingly thrilling football game Thursday night, and both were forced to do so with their backup quarterbacks under center.

Cleveland’s Brian Hoyer was the first starter to go down, leaving the game with a knee injury just four minutes in after an awkward hit from Bills linebacker Kiko Alonso.

The Browns fear that the former Patriots backup, who had won both of his starts entering Thursday, suffered torn knee ligaments on the hit, according to NFL Network’s Alex Flanagan. He will undergo an MRI on Friday.

Buffalo then lost its signal caller midway through the third when EJ Manuel took a shoulder to the right knee along the sideline and did not return. Jeff Tuel entered for the Bills, but he could not outduel Brandon Weeden, who shook off a rocky start to complete 13 of 24 passes for 197 yards and a touchdown in what turned out to be a 37-24 win for Cleveland.
