Camilo Sanvezzo is a leading contender for Major League Soccer’s MVP and Golden Boot awards in 2013. He can add “Goal of the Year” to the list of potential honors after he scored a stunner on Sunday.

Camilo (as he is commonly known) is a standout attacker for the Vancouver Whitecaps who spectacularly scored the game-tying goal in his team’s 2-2 draw with the Portland Timbers. In the 78th minute of a hard-fought Cascadia derby, Whitecaps defender Lee Young-Pyo delivered a cross from the edge of the area. Camilo was 16 yards away from the Portland goal when the pass reached him, and he flung his body in the air and struck the ball with a sideways, overhead kick. The audacious shot beat Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.

The goal was Camilo’s second of the game and 18th of the season. He trails Marco Di Vaio by one goal for the league lead. Since moving to MLS in 2011, he has emerged as one of the league’s premier players. Any awards he wins (or contends for) after a stellar 2013 season will be just desserts for the 25-year-old Brazilian.
