Cardinals’ Flight ‘Significantly Delayed’ Due to Mechanical Issue, Not Expected in Boston Until ‘Late’ Tuesday Night

Apparently naming your franchise after an animal that lives in the sky doesn’t help the team actually fly. Just ask the St. Louis Cardinals.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch first reported the delay at approximately 4:41 p.m. on Twitter, 19 minutes before Cardinals manager Mike Matheny was scheduled to enter a conference call with the media, likely from an office at Fenway or from the confines of his Boston-area hotel room.

Matheny still made the call, but did so from the tarmac of the runway the Cardinals plane was sitting on in St. Louis. Goold initially reported that the plane was dealing with ‘mechanical issues,’ and that the flight to Boston was ‘significantly delayed.’ Matheny apparently reiterated this when the conference call began, as FOX’s Ken Rosenthal soon tweeted the information out as well, adding that the Cardinals had been “on the ground for several hours.”

Worried Cardinal fans took to Twitter asking if Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks was lying on the runway obstructing the plane from leaving — albeit in jest — to which Goold responded by asking fans to photoshop a picture of Middlebrooks in front of the team charter. No reports of Middlebrooks or any other Red Sox staying behind in St. Louis have surfaced.

CBS Sports is also reporting the Cardinals are not expected to land in Boston until “late” Tuesday night, meaning the short flight to Boston may be delayed several more hours before take off.
