While everyone in Boston anxiously awaits the possibility of what Wednesday night holds — plenty of beard-tugging, beer-can punting and ski goggles galore — the Cardinals spent the day before their most important game of the season just trying to make it to Beantown.

Mechanical issues kept the Cards in their hometown much longer than they anticipated, with the team spending more than six hours stuck on the tarmac at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport on Tuesday afternoon. The lengthy delay finally culminated in the group boarding a new plane around 8 p.m. CST, but the travel issues didn’t seem all that bad for the team down three games to two.

“We have some younger kids, but I’m impressed with how everybody has handled it,” Mike Matheny said in an interview conducted from the plane. “Fortunately we have plenty of food, snacks for the kids, lots of entertainment with on-board movies, and everybody travels with all their high-tech stuff. Most of these kids are pretty happy that they’re not in school right now, and it’s a great way to spend a day.”

The entertainment expanded far beyond a few movies, though, as the players kept the situation light and took the time to reveal some aspirations of storm chasing, get some pizza and “toasted ravs” delivered to the plane and best of all, it allowed Joe Kelly the opportunity to engage in the most epic battle of all — The Standoff: Part 2.
