Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith helped his own cause against the Red Wings on Saturday night.
Smith joined an exclusive club during the contest, becoming just the 11th goalie in NHL history to light the lamp, and the first in franchise history to accomplish the feat.
With the clock winding down, the Red Wings found themselves down by two goals, and with their goalie pulled, the stage was set for Smith. The netminder scooped up the puck with about five seconds remaining in the game, promptly set it down and fired off a shot to the other end of the ice that crossed the goal line with one-tenth of a second left to play in Phoenix’s 5-2 win.
“I don’t know what to say really,” Smith told the Arizona Republic. “Obviously I’m thrilled with the way we played. It’s just a bonus to be able to score a goal in this league obviously as a goaltender.”
After adding an assist against the Hurricanes earlier in the season, Smith now has more points than six of his teammates, and as Paul Bissonette quickly pointed out before his chirpy followers did — the goalie found the back of the net before Biz Nasty did.
