Donte Whitner’s Name Change to ‘Hitner’ Delayed Due to Government Shutdown

Donte Whitner caused a bit of a hubbub last week when he announced that he would be dropping the “W” from his last name to legally become Donte Hitner. But when the 49ers safety took the field Sunday night at Candlestick Park, his red home jersey still bore his former moniker.

Why? Blame the government.

Due to the government shutdown that went into effect last Tuesday, the paperwork making Whitner’s name change official has not yet been processed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The mix-up didn’t seem to psyche out the defensive back too much, as he finished with three tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in a 34-3 rout of the Texans. Plus, maybe the delay will give somebody time to convince Whitner that legally changing your name on a whim really isn’t that great of an idea.
