Game 3 left a bad taste in Jake Peavy’s mouth. Fortunately, he might get a chance to rinse it out.
Peavy is available out of the bullpen for Game 5 of the World Series on Monday. And “as of now,” Peavy is expected to start Game 7 on Thursday if the series extends to a winner-take-all showdown.
John Lackey made his first relief appearance since 2004 in Game 4, so an appearance out of the bullpen for Peavy would mark the second straight contest in which a starter is thrust into a relief role. Farrell said that Felix Doubront, who threw 57 pitches combined in Games 3 and 4, would be available in an “emergency situation.”
Peavy hasn’t been good in his last two starts. He struggled mightily for three innings in Detroit in Game 4 of the ALCS on Oct. 16, and got off to a shaky start in Game 3 of the World Series on Saturday. It doesn’t sound like the Red Sox are going to preserve Doubront for a potential Game 7 start, though.
“Everybody’s going to be available Game 7,” Farrell said Monday. “We haven’t gotten to a point of saying, you know what, let’s hold [Doubront] out as a potential starter.”
Clay Buchholz, who went four innings in his Game 4 start, also volunteered to pitch out of the bullpen in Game 6 or 7.
