College football’s smallest player got the biggest carry of his career on Saturday afternoon.
Jayson Carter, a 4-foot-9, 135-pound walk-on running back at Rice saw his three years of hard work with the Owls’ scouting team pay off as he made his collegiate debut against UTEP, late in the fourth quarter.
“That young man is here ever day busting his tail on the scout team. He deserves it,” Rice coach David Bailiff told the Houston Chronicle after the game. “I’m thrilled we got Jayson into a Division I football game.”
Carter, who was born with a genetic disorder that hindered his growth, took the carry on second-and-eight and ran for a one-yard gain.
“I did what I was supposed to … I didn’t get negative yards,” Carter said.
While it was a great moment for Carter, his teammates were also happy for the running back, but they had just one issue with his play and they peppered him with the same question on the sidelines as Carter left the field to a booming ovation from the crowd.
“They asked me why I didn’t score,” said Carter.
