Kolten Wong knew it was a bad one even as it was happening.
The pinch runner, who came in for Allen Craig with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 4 on Sunday night, got himself a little too far away from the first base bag as Red Sox closer Koji Uehara worked on Carlos Beltran. Uehara made him pay for it.
Uehara threw an unsolicited pick-off to first base, and Mike Napoli grabbed and tagged, ending the game and giving the Red Sox the 4-2 victory. Uehara said after the game that no one told him to make the throw, but he felt it, and it paid off.
Wong’s instincts weren’t as great. He said later that his foot buckled as he tried to move back, delaying him just enough that he couldn’t get to the base in time. It was a rough way to end the game, especially with Beltran at the plate.
