These aren’t your grandpa’s snapbacks.
The new “Menace” series of NHL-licensed headwear, created by Zephyr, looks like a set of everyday baseball caps at first glance, but a closer look reveals that they all feature an image of a ferocious, snarling mouth on the underbrim.
For most teams, this is kind of cool — not cool as in we would wear it, because these are all rather ridiculous, but cool as in the design is pretty clever. The Bruins’ mascot is a bear, so their brim features a mouth full of bear teeth. Awesome. Makes sense. The same goes for the Sharks, Coyotes, Panthers, Whalers, etc.
We’re especially partial toward the designs for the Avalanche and — although we hate to admit it — the Penguins.
But when you start getting down to the teams that have no discernible animal mascot, things get a little dicey, as the designers appear to have remedied that problem by just tossing in teeth to whatever logo they have. That’s how we end up with a leaf with teeth on Toronto’s hat, some sort of weird shark mouth with wings on Detroit’s, and generic tooth designs for the Canadiens, Flyers and Ducks.
Why the decision was made to give teeth to a duck, the world may never know.
